School bus accident and drug use: A tragedy that highlights the importance of screening

On January 30, 2025, a terrible school bus accident saddened Eure-et-Loir. A 15-year-old high school student lost her life and about twenty other people were injured. According to the initial findings of the investigation, the vehicle’s driver tested positive for drugs. This tragedy once again raises the issue of school transport safety and the need for regular driver screening.

Drug use and road safety: A major risk

Drug use significantly impairs drivers’ reaction abilities, alertness, and judgment. According to several studies, a driver under the influence of drugs has slower reflexes, altered distance perception, and reduced concentration capacity. In the case of school transport, where responsibility is even greater, tolerance must be zero.

Workplace screening: A solution to prevent new tragedies

At AMA Prévention, we advocate for the implementation of strict control measures to prevent these avoidable tragedies. Drug screening tests, whether saliva or urine-based, are simple and effective tools to detect the presence of psychoactive substances. Introducing regular and random checks for public transport drivers, especially in school settings, could significantly reduce accident risks.

The solutions we offer

Workplace screening: We support transport companies in setting up regular screening protocols, thus ensuring a safe environment for all.

Training and awareness: Our training programs aim to educate transport professionals about the dangers of drug use and promote a culture of responsibility.

Tailored prevention solutions: In addition to screening, we offer prevention actions to raise drivers’ awareness of the risks and consequences of drug use.

Why stricter regulations are necessary

While some companies already implement random tests, it is crucial to strengthen these measures at the national level. Mandatory screening of school transport drivers, combined with deterrent sanctions in case of a positive test, could greatly limit risks.

Parents must be able to send their children to school with peace of mind, confident that the professionals responsible for their transport adhere to strict sobriety conditions.

Workplace screening: A humane and preventive approach

Implementing screening campaigns in the workplace is a sensitive issue that requires a balanced approach between prevention and responsibility. At AMA Prévention, we have developed specific support for companies wishing to establish these campaigns in a caring and non-stigmatizing framework, in collaboration with our partner Drogue Info Service, specialized in supporting people struggling with psychoactive substance use. Before any form of punishment, our goal is to offer a humane response to employees facing drug or alcohol-related issues. Rather than immediate sanctions, we prioritize awareness, listening, and support, helping employers identify and guide affected individuals toward appropriate solutions. A healthy and safe work environment also involves establishing open dialogue, allowing these issues to be addressed without fear or taboo, with the support of competent experts.

Conclusion: A collective responsibility

This tragic accident reminds us that the fight against drug use in the workplace is a matter of public safety. Employers, public authorities, and specialized screening companies like AMA Prévention have a crucial role to play in preventing such tragedies from happening again.

We will continue to actively commit to promoting workplace screening and raising awareness among transport stakeholders about the dangers of drugs. It is urgent to act to protect our children and ensure their safety during school journeys.

B-SAFE Scientific Validation

The B-SAFE project, a drug detector pen for drinks, is validated and supported by Professor Jean-Claude Alvarez, toxicologist, professor of pharmacology-toxicology, and director of the toxicology laboratory at CHU Raymond-Poincaré/AP-HP in Garches.

A leading authority in toxicology, he is associated with reference work conducted in France on psychoactive substances and chemical submission, in a national ecosystem also brought into public debate by voices such as Sandrine Josso and Caroline Darian.

This validation strengthens B-SAFE’s technological positioning and the accuracy of its detection for preventing drugs in drinks. Discover the B-SAFE product sheet.
