Saliva test before a long trip: usefulness, limitations, and best practices

A saliva test can be useful for self-monitoring, but it cannot guarantee risk-free driving. It detects certain substances at specific thresholds without directly measuring alertness, coordination, or fatigue.

What a saliva test can actually indicate

The device reacts to one or more families of substances present in saliva. Depending on the model, it can detect THC, cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, MDMA, opiates, or benzodiazepines.

The instructions specify the sampling method, reading time, thresholds, and limitations. Two visually similar products can have different performance and detection panels.

What it cannot determine

  • medical or legal fitness to drive;
  • the exact intensity of the effects felt;
  • the presence of all drugs and medications;
  • fatigue, illness, or sleep disorders;
  • the future result of an official test conducted by another method.
A negative result only means that the targeted substances were not detected at the test’s threshold under the sampling conditions. It does not mean “fit to drive.”

How to use the test correctly

  1. check the packaging integrity and expiration date;
  2. store the device at the indicated temperature;
  3. follow pre-sampling restrictions, including food, drinks, or tobacco as per the instructions;
  4. collect enough saliva;
  5. read the result only within the specified time window;
  6. consider a missing control line as an invalid test.

Why are detection times found online unreliable?

Detection duration depends on the molecule, frequency of use, quantity, consumption method, metabolism, and device threshold. A generic chart cannot predict exactly when a person will test negative.

For cannabis, consuming CBD products containing THC can also lead to a positive result. Highly concentrated or poorly labeled products make estimates even more uncertain.

Do not simply delay your departure by a few hours based on an estimate. After consumption, plan for a sober driver or another transportation solution.

Preparing for a holiday trip

Screening does not replace other safety measures:

  • get enough sleep before departure;
  • take regular breaks and stop at the first sign of drowsiness;
  • do not mix alcohol, drugs, and medications;
  • check treatment pictograms;
  • alternate drivers only with sober and rested people;
  • check the regulations of each country you cross.

Why choose a Drugdiag® product?

Drugdiag® tests distributed by AMA Prévention have clearly indicated panels and thresholds. Some models carry the mention “Used by the French Armed Forces.” This mention must be verified product by product and does not turn a self-test into an official control.

Which test to choose?

A THC-only test may be suitable when cannabis is the only substance sought. A five- or six-drug panel is more appropriate when multi-substance detection is needed. The choice depends on the actual need, not the maximum number of lines displayed.

Reminder: a self-test is a presumptive prevention tool. It does not replace an official analysis, medical advice, or the decision not to drive after consumption.
