An individual looking for a prevention tool, a company implementing a regulated procedure, and a healthcare professional do not necessarily need the same product.
Before purchasing, check:
- the specific substance being tested for;
- the intended use context as specified by the manufacturer;
- the number of tests required;
- shelf life and storage conditions;
- the procedure to follow in case of a positive or invalid result.
The detection threshold
The threshold, expressed in ng/mL, corresponds to the concentration at which the test is designed to react. A lower threshold can detect smaller concentrations, but it is not automatically better for all uses.
References with thresholds of 25 or 50 ng/mL may meet other specifications. The threshold should always be interpreted alongside the panel, intended use, and declared performance.
Performance factors to consider
- Analytical sensitivity: ability to detect the target around the threshold;
- Specificity: ability to limit false reactions;
- Cross-reactivities: molecules that may trigger the test;
- Interferences: foods, drinks, medications, or conditions that may affect the result;
- Rate of invalid results: useful data to assess sampling robustness.
This information should be found in the instructions or technical documents. A commercial claim like “99% reliability” only makes sense if the calculation method and studied population are specified.
Quality of the instructions
A thorough instruction leaflet clearly describes the sampling, reading time, line interpretation, limitations, storage, and steps to take in case of an invalid result.
Also check for the presence of an internal control. Without a control line or indicator, the result should not be interpreted.
Traceability and compliance
The manufacturer or marketing authorization holder must be identifiable. The product must include a reference, batch number, expiration date, and necessary information for traceability.
Compliance with applicable in vitro diagnostic device regulations is essential but alone does not allow comparison between two products. Performance data remain decisive.
What a THC saliva test cannot guarantee
- fitness to drive;
- the exact time of consumption;
- the amount of cannabis used;
- an identical result during a later official check;
- absence of THC after consuming a CBD product.
