Durées indicatives de détection des drogues dans la salive, l’urine, le sang et les cheveux

How long do drugs remain detectable?

There is no universal detection window. A drug can remain detectable for a longer or shorter time depending on the substance, dose, frequency of use, type of sample, test threshold, and individual characteristics.

Detection and effects do not mean the same thing

The presence of a substance or its metabolites alone does not precisely measure the effects felt or the ability to drive. Conversely, no longer feeling effects does not guarantee a negative test result.

A negative result only means that the targeted substance was not detected above the device’s threshold, in this sample, at this time.

Why does the analyzed matrix change the detection window?

  • Saliva: generally used to detect recent use, especially in road safety or professional contexts.
  • Urine: mainly detects metabolites and can remain positive longer than saliva.
  • Blood: used in medical, toxicological, or legal contexts depending on the situation.
  • Hair: can document exposure over a longer period but does not assess very recent use with the same logic as a saliva test.

What factors affect the detection window?

  • the substance and its elimination rate;
  • the dose and concentration of the product;
  • single or repeated use;
  • the time between use and sampling;
  • metabolism, health status, and hydration;
  • detection threshold and sample quality;
  • storage and test reading conditions.

Why should detection time tables be interpreted with caution?

Durations published online are often rough estimates. They cannot predict the result for a specific person. Two individuals who consumed a similar product may get different results.

Synthetic substances, highly dosed products, or mixtures make estimation even more uncertain. Moreover, a test only detects the molecules included in its panel.

There is no guaranteed delay before driving again after consumption. A negative test does not authorize driving and does not reliably predict a later control.

How to ensure reliable screening?

  1. choose a test suited to the substance and context;
  2. check the panel, threshold, expiration date, and instructions;
  3. follow sampling conditions and reading time;
  4. verify the device’s validity line;
  5. confirm presumptive results when medical, professional, or legal consequences are significant.

To remember: detection time always depends on the substance–matrix–threshold combination. It should never be confused with a definite duration of effects or a guarantee of safe driving.
