Falsification of saliva tests: myths, limits, and reality
Can a saliva drug test really be fooled?
Promises about “anti-THC” sprays, mouthwashes and online tricks can create a false sense of control. No home method guarantees a negative result or the failure of an official testing procedure.
A saliva self-test provides an indication only within the limits of its instructions. It cannot reliably predict an official check or establish that it is safe to drive.
What the common claims leave out
Sprays and mouthwashes
A temporary change in the mouth is not a guarantee of a negative screening result or laboratory analysis.
Drinks and food
Do not assume that eating or drinking removes a substance from the body or guarantees a particular result.
Intensive brushing
It does not establish that the sample will test negative. Always follow the sampling instructions.
A calculated waiting time
Detection depends on the substance, pattern of consumption, test and person. A general online timetable cannot guarantee an individual's result.
What does the control line establish?
On a strip-based test, the “C” line is a function control that must be interpreted according to the device's instructions. It does not, by itself, prove that a sample has not been altered. Do not interpret a result if the validity criteria are not met.
Invalid does not mean negative. What happens next in an official check depends on the applicable procedure. A missing line does not predict the authorities' next step.
What a rapid test can actually tell you
A rapid test screens the collected sample for the substances listed in its instructions. Results can be incorrect. The test does not measure fitness to drive and does not guarantee the result of a later check.

Screening and laboratory verification: the French example
In France, official roadside screening and laboratory verification are separate stages. The current Service Public guidance explains the procedure and the applicable rules. A privately purchased test does not replace that procedure.
This example concerns France. It should not be applied as a description of German, Swiss, Belgian or other national procedures.
A negative test is not confirmation of safe driving. A test has a defined panel and cut-off; it does not look for every substance or measure every cause of impaired alertness.
Plan the journey without relying on a test
- Arrange a sober driver or another way home after consumption.
- Do not treat feeling clear-headed or obtaining a negative result as permission to drive.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions and distinguish a negative result from an invalid one.
- If someone is unwell or poisoning is suspected, seek medical help rather than relying on a consumer test.
