Why plan ahead before the event?
An end-of-year meal, a seminar, or an internal party can bring together colleagues who do not all consume alcohol in the same way and who sometimes need to drive afterwards. Clear organization avoids having to improvise when someone is no longer fit to drive or make a safe decision.
Prevention should remain proportionate to the event’s format, location, schedule, number of participants, and available transportation options.
Before the party: prepare a simple and understandable framework
- define rules regarding alcohol and communicate them before the event;
- provide an attractive offer of non-alcoholic drinks and easily accessible water;
- organize measured service rather than permanent self-service;
- identify one or more reference persons able to intervene calmly;
- anticipate returns: public transport, taxis, accommodation, or designated driver;
- have emergency contacts and procedures ready in case of illness.
During the event: act without stigmatizing
Organizing teams must be able to remind the rules without humiliating a participant. It is helpful to regularly offer water and food, never pressure anyone to drink, and slow down or stop service when someone shows signs of impairment.
A disoriented, very drowsy, aggressive person or someone unable to stand should not be left alone. In case of loss of consciousness, abnormal breathing, or serious illness, call 15 or 112.
What role for breathalyzers?
Breathalyzers can be made available to encourage self-checking before departure. They must be accompanied by clear instructions and used according to their manual.
After the party: prevent dangerous departures
When a participant does not seem fit to drive, the solution must be practical and immediate: call a relative, arrange a taxi, use planned transport, or offer accommodation. Vehicle keys must not be handed over to someone clearly unable to drive safely.
After the event, a brief feedback session helps identify what worked, incidents avoided, and measures to improve for the next edition.
