Professional drivers: preventing risks related to alcohol and drugs
Partager
Why does the transport sector require special vigilance?
A bus driver, school coach driver, heavy goods vehicle driver, medical transport driver, or service vehicle driver carries a safety responsibility. Alcohol, drugs, certain medications, fatigue, or illness can affect reflexes, attention, and decision-making.
The goal of an internal policy is not to organize general surveillance of private life. It is to identify situations where immediate fitness to drive must be protected and to provide a response known to all.
Start with risk assessment
The company must analyze its actual activities: night shifts, long working days, passenger transport, handling heavy vehicles, isolated work, time pressure, and history of incidents. These elements feed into the single document for occupational risk assessment and the prevention plan.
- identify positions where an error can cause serious harm;
- define signs or circumstances that require suspending a shift;
- plan for a replacement driver or an operational solution;
- train managers to intervene without humiliation or improvised diagnosis;
- organize referral to occupational health or emergency services depending on the situation.
Can screening be used in the workplace?
The Council of State has accepted, under conditions, the use of saliva tests for employees assigned to positions with a particular level of risk. The procedure must be justified, proportionate, provided for by applicable internal rules, and accompanied by guarantees, including the possibility to contest the result according to the company’s procedure.
A voluntary awareness campaign should not be confused with employer control that could lead to disciplinary action. Objectives, confidentiality, authorized persons, and conduct must be defined before any use.
What to do before starting a shift?
- temporarily exclude the person from driving when an immediate risk is identified;
- apply the internal procedure without publicly exposing the employee;
- document observable facts rather than assumptions;
- use a test only if the framework provides for it and the operator is trained;
- organize necessary confirmation, support, or medical evaluation;
- secure the service with a replacement solution.
What role for driver self-testing?
A saliva test purchased preventively can help a person better understand their screening risk. It does not guarantee the absence of substances, does not measure actual driving ability, and never constitutes permission to drive.
Detection time depends notably on the substance, device threshold, frequency of use, and individual characteristics. There is no universal delay that guarantees a negative result.
Implementing a coherent system
AMA Prévention supports transporters in choosing tests, preparing awareness materials, and structuring an approach adapted to driving positions.
